How We Help
Sierra Roots works directly with unhoused and housing-insecure people in Nevada County, providing food, clothing, emergency shelter, basic necessities, and compassionate, relationship-based support. Our programs are designed to meet people where they are and help keep our neighbors safe, connected, and supported.
Relationship-Based Support
We meet people where they are. By forming real relationships, we help individuals navigate barriers, connect with resources, and take steps toward greater stability. Our approach is personal and nonjudgmental. We listen, build trust, and work alongside people rather than assuming that everyone needs the same kind of help.
Thursday Community Lunch
Sierra Roots serves a free, hot lunch every Thursday. Everyone experiencing food insecurity is welcome. More than a meal, our lunches offer a place to gather, connect with volunteers and neighbors, obtain needed supplies, and enjoy a meal in a welcoming community.
During severe winter weather, Sierra Roots operates an Emergency Weather Shelter in the lower level of the Nevada City Veterans Hall. The shelter provides a warm place to sleep, hot meals, basic supplies, and compassionate support. It is intentionally low-barrier so people who are particularly vulnerable during dangerous weather can get inside.
Basic Needs & Supplies
Sometimes a little practical help makes a very big difference. Through our outreach, community lunches, and Emergency Weather Shelter, Sierra Roots provides clothing, sleeping bags, backpacks, hygiene supplies, and other basic necessities to people who need them. Donated items help our neighbors stay warmer, healthier, and safer while experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
