During dangerous winter weather, Sierra Roots provides a safe, warm place for people experiencing homelessness in Nevada County. Our Emergency Weather Shelter offers more than protection from the elements — guests receive hot meals, basic necessities, compassionate support, and a welcoming place to rest.
Who We Serve
- The Emergency Weather Shelter is intentionally low-barrier, with the primary goal of providing shelter to people most in need during dangerous weather.
- We welcome adults regardless of gender, physical or mental health status, or substance use
- Alcohol and drug use are not permitted inside the shelter. Naloxone is available in case of an overdose.
- Pets are welcome as long as they are kept on a leash or in a carrier or crate.
How We Do It
- Sierra Roots establishes shelter-opening criteria in collaboration with Nevada County. During the winter season, staff monitor weather forecasts and conditions to determine when the Emergency Weather Shelter should open.
- When opening criteria are met, our team coordinates staff and volunteers, prepares meals, readies the shelter space, and lets the community know the shelter will be open.
- We work with partner organizations throughout Nevada County to spread the word about shelter openings and help people access the shelter.

Volunteers help prepare the shelter, welcome guests, prepare meals, organize supplies, and much more. Whatever your skills or availability, we would love to find a way for you to help.
Direct Shelter Support
Help create a safe, welcoming environment for shelter guests. Volunteers assist with setting up the shelter, welcoming and checking in guests, providing supplies, and helping throughout the evening. It’s a meaningful opportunity to connect with people in our community and offer warmth, dignity, and care.
Meal Preparation
Help provide warm, nourishing meals for shelter guests. Volunteers prepare dinners and breakfasts that can be delivered to the shelter and served during an opening. Individuals, families, and groups can all help keep our guests well fed during dangerous weather.
Host a Donation Drive
Help us keep the shelter stocked with the things our guests need most. Your workplace, school, faith community, neighborhood, or other group can organize a drive for winter clothing, hygiene supplies, and other needed items.
