The Sierra Roots Emergency Weather Sheter provides safe, warm temporary shelter to unhoused people in Navada County on the coldest nights throughout the winter season.
Who we serve
- The Emergency Weather Shelter has an intentionally low-barrier to entry in support of our primary goal of sheltering those most in need during dangerous weather events.
- We welcome all types of participants regardless of gender, age, physical or mental health status or drug use. We do not take children due to the nature of low-barrier.
- Though we have zero-tolerance policy on alcohol or drug use while in the shelter, no substance testing is performed at check-in. We offer Naloxone and testing kits to all participants and safely store their substances overnight without judgement.
- Pets are welcome
How We Do It
- Opening criteria are established annually in collaboration by Sierra Roots and Nevada County. November through April, Sierra Roots staff monitors weather daily reports.
- When criteria are met, our small but mighty team coordinates staff and volunteers, cook meals, prepares the shelter space and publicizes the shelter opening.
- We work with several partner organizations throughout the county to ensure participants receive word about openings and support participants in getting to the shelter.

Whether you’re interested in working directly with and relationship-building with participants or prefer flexible hours behind the scenes, it takes all types of labor to pull off each shelter opening. Described below are some of our opportunities but all skill levels are welcome – we would love to find a place for you at Sierra Roots!
Direct Shelter Support
- Help set up the shelter to create a safe, welcoming environment for participants.
- Greet and check-in shelter participants. You may be the first smile a participant has received all day. An excellent chance to get to know our community members, extend warmth and care and set a tone for the restful night ahead.
Meal Preparation
- Recipients look forward to hot, homemade dinners and breakfasts during their stay. Have a great casserole recipe? Have a great breakfast burrito folding skills? Volunteer to prepare a meal and know your love is directly nourishing those in need.
Host a Donation Drive
- Access to winter clothes, hygiene supplies and prepared food items brings another level of care to our shelter participants. Hold a drive at your workplace or community group to help us gather donations.
